Privacy policy and terms of use
Geir family explorer is a personal family-tree viewer. It is written and used by one person, Geir Bækholt, and it runs on his own computer. It is not a product, not a service, and not available to anyone else. This page exists because the Geni API requires every registered application to publish a privacy policy and terms of use, and because those documents should say what is actually true.
Privacy policy
What data the application handles
The application reads genealogical data from the operator's own Geni.com account, using the operator's own credentials: names, dates, places, family relationships and profile photographs of people recorded in that family tree. Much of this is personal data about living people.
Where that data goes
To one computer, and nowhere else. The data is stored in local files and rendered into a local HTML file that is opened in a browser on the same machine. There is no server, no database, no hosting, and no network destination other than Geni.com itself when data is fetched.
What does not happen
- The data is not published, shared, sold, licensed or transferred to anyone.
- It is not sent to any third party, and no third-party service processes it.
- There is no analytics, no telemetry, no tracking and no advertising.
- No data is collected from anybody else, because there are no other users.
Credentials
The Geni access token is stored locally, is used only to make requests to Geni.com, and is not transmitted anywhere else. It is excluded from version control.
Retention and deletion
Data obtained through the Geni API is kept only as long as the application is in use. It is deleted if the operator stops using the application, and it will be deleted if Geni terminates API access, as the Geni API Terms of Use require.
People recorded in the tree
Relatives who appear in this family tree may ask what is recorded about them, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be removed from the local copy. Write to the address below. Note that the underlying records live in Geni.com and are governed by Geni's own privacy policy; a request to Geni may be more effective than one made here.
Terms of use
There is no public offering to accept. The application is not distributed, so these terms describe the terms on which the operator uses his own software.
- The application is used by its operator only, on personally owned hardware, for private family-history purposes.
- It is provided with no warranty of any kind. Genealogical data is often incomplete or wrong, and nothing shown should be treated as authoritative.
- It is not sold, licensed or made available to anyone, and no fee is charged.
- These terms may change. The current version is always the one on this page.
Relationship to Geni.com
This application is independent. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Geni.com or MyHeritage. "Geni" is used only to name the service the data comes from. Use of the Geni API is subject to the Geni API Terms of Use, and use of Geni.com to its Terms of Use.
